Weekly Reading Test on Sept. 13, 2013!!!

It has been 3 weeks since we have started the new series with great new stories, vivid illustrations, and figurative language.

This Friday is the day that we not only will be taking the spelling quiz focusing on the long e, o, u sounds but we will also be taking our first BIG reading comprehension test.

This weekly test will cover:

  • Reading comprehension (Theme: How friends depend on each other)
  • Vocabulary (discussed and practiced in class)
  • Word analysis (discussed and practiced in class; inflectional endings; -es, -s,-ed, -ing, determining if a word tells about the past/present; determining plural/singular words)
  • 1 Written response
  • Total of 21 problems
Please encourage your child to PAY ATTENTION and PARTICIPATE in class discussions as well as assignments given.

Math update for Ms. Cunningham!!!

The chapter 1 test has been given and your child's grade has been posted. If you would like to know what they received, log onto the Parent Portal.

Please continue to drill your child on place value (hundred, tens, ones).

Chapter 2 is in full swing and we are working on comparing numbers: greater than >, less than <, and equal to =.

** Make sure, if you haven't done so already, to sign the Science safety agreement and return it to Ms. Cunningham.

Star testing and homework

Students will be starting to get STAR tested to determine their ZPD (zone of proximal development) or reading level.

Encourage your child to do their absolute best when taking this computer based test. It assesses how long it takes them to finish the test calculating how many words per minute they read as well as reading comprehension by how many correct questions they answered.

When I compile all of the scores, I will then tell your child what book level your child should be picking when they visit the school library on Tuesday's.

*****
Homework for the weekend:
Comprehension worksheet that focuses on key details. We will be discussing this more next week when we read the story HELP! by Holly Keller.

McGraw-Hill Mobile App

Great news!! The new series we are using for second grade has an App for your iphone and tablet devices. If you are interested it is only $2.99. It is compatible with the iPad and requires iOS 4.2 or later. It also has some  apps compatible with Androids.

Check it out!!!

It couldn't hurt getting a jump start and extra practice on certain concepts and skills with your child.

Spelling fun!

I've found this site that I think your student will enjoy. The best part about it is that it uses the spelling words that I assign for the week and gives them a chance to practice them in small quizzes and games.... and IT'S FREE!!

The homework I assigned today had the website on it; but if it somehow didn't make it home, it is listed below.

If by chance you don't have the direct link you can always go to spellingcity.com and click on "Find a list"; you type in my last name and you will see:

Open House

Thank you so much to the parents who came out to meet the Second Grade team at Jesse J. McCrary!!

There was a lot of information presented regarding the basic operation of the school and classroom rules and expectations.

Please stay posted as I will be occasionally putting information on the blog to keep you informed about what's going on at school and tips to help your child in reading or math.
