Holiday Celebration!

Our class is having a Holiday Celebration thanks to Mrs. Jahjah! About one week ago your student should have come home with a letter that explains what our Room Mom is trying to organize with your help. Food, prizes, games, and more!

We need your help and support! In order to supply pizza, drink, cookies and crafts, we are asking for a small donation of $5 to help cover the cost. Also if you have any small toys or cool gifts to act as prizes please bring them in! We are ready to start collecting so please let's make this a special celebration to remember.

If you have any questions feel free to contact myself of Mrs. Jahjah. In your students planner write a note and I will provide you with Mrs. Jahjah's contact information so you can coordinate with her on how you can be of assistance.

Our celebration will be on December 16, 2011.

Happy Holidays  :)

  • Make sure that on this day they bring a bag lunch and drink as well as an EXTRA water bottle as it may get hot.
  • Dress as if you are going camping. So, long pants or shorts and tennis shoes. Your child may also bring a hat. If there are any other questions make sure to write them in their planner or email me and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Scholastic Flyer for the Month of October!!

On Friday, your child came home with a Lucky Scholastic Flyer. If you didn't get a chance to get books from the Book Fair because of the price, here is your chance to order many more books for a lower price. It also helps out our class and build our classroom library.

I am hoping that with the next order, I will choose some books for the kids to add to the library. I want to say thank you to those of you who did order books in September! Remember, almost every month I will be sending the fliers home, so there are many opportunities to purchase.

After you make your selections on the order, you can return the order forms to our class with cash, check, or money order made payable to Kernan Trail Elementary.

The order forms must be returned by October 20, 2011, in order to receive the books.

(You may also order online atwww.scholastic.com/bookclubs  )
Online Ordering Information
Web address: scholastic.com/bookclubs
Class Activation Code: GQWNB

Ordering online allows you to choose from a much-wider selection of books than in the printed flyer. Plus, you can send your orders directly to me online and use your credit card to pay.

Fall Festival!!!

The Fall Festival is this Friday October 21!!! It is going to be a lot of fun! There will be games and hay rides; something for everyone! Your child should have come home with a salmon colored flyer that will let you know how many tickets you need for a particular activity.

It is really a great deal! 5 tickets for $1!!! Pre-order now and when you come on Friday you will get your tickets at the gate.

Our worms have been set free!

Or I should rather say, our worms have decomposed! On Friday marked the 3rd week that our class did an experiment to see what would happen to a bag filled with leaves, dirt, and worms compared to a compost bag without worms.

The students and I came up with a couple of reasons why they didn't survive. During our science block, the kids took note of their observations of the two bags and even got to touch the dirt (with plastic gloves) to add the other element of our senses. This was truly a learning experience for the kids and myself!

Now, on to the next experiment!

Worm Update!

It has almost been 2 weeks since our class has collected leaves for our class compost and added worms to one bag of soil. We studied the habitat of worms and their impact on natural resources. Every child had the chance to put 1 worm in the bag (total of 15 worms) and boy, oh boy, was this an exciting event!

Last Friday the kids got a chance to record their observations and we all came to the consensus that some of our worms have died and are beginning to decompose. We know that we put 15 worms in the bag, some have decomposed, but we do not know if there are any live worms in the middle of the compost pile. (I admittedly am a little squeamish when it comes to worms and bugs) We will keep you posted!

Here is a picture of your kids the day we made the compost bags.

Re-Takes for Fall Pictures

Today we took fall pictures. If your child was absent or you are not pleased with the first picture, retakes will be on November 17, 2011.

Every student took pictures whether they paid or not. When the prints are delivered to school you will have the choice to view them and pay for them if you would like to keep them. Any pictures that you do not want can simply be returned back to me.

All grade levels are participating and I encourage you to come out Tuesday night.

Our Media Specialist has planned for the Scholastic Book Fair to come to our school October 10-14, 2011.

This is different from the "Lucky" Scholastic Flyer that I send home on a monthly bases.

The books that are at the Book Fair charge 7% sales tax. If you plan on providing money for your child, please think about the amount of money that will be applied to their purchase.

Also, please do not send your child with a personal check, as they will not be accepted; credit cards however, will be accepted.

Boy Scouts!

Today a representative from the Boy Scouts came by our class to spread the word, that any boy interested in Boy Scouts should come out with a parent to the Dining Room tomorrow night at 7:00PM. He really got the kids fired up about all the cool things they would be participating in! It should be a good experience for all who join.

Spelling practice!

I have finally finished preparing the spelling tool, Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check. The tool has everything your child will need to practice their spelling. Included are the directions in a sheet protector and a wet erase marker. It will be the students' responsibility to take care and keep track of the materials provided.

I will be teaching the students how to use the tool and when I feel they have a good understanding of how it works, I will allow them to take it home and practice with their High Frequency Words (HFW) and Vocabulary Words.

This activity may take the place of the Grammar section of their homework seeing as though they are already writing sentences for the HFW.

I will post when you should be looking for the tool to be coming home with your child.

Scholastic Books!!

Tomorrow I will be sending home 3 issues of the Scholastic flier. The issues are packed with great leveled readers for your children!

This is an optional purchase, but with every order you help our class earn points to receive free books and build our classroom library.

After you make your selections on the order, you can return the order forms to our class with cash, check, or money order made payable to Kernan Trail Elementary.

The order forms must be returned by September 23, 2011, in order to receive the books.  We thank you for your support and encouragement with your children, as they strive to obtain their second grade goals.

Thank you so much!

Scheduled Days to Volunteer

I want to say thank you to those of you who have shared an interest in helping out in the classroom. If it is possible, write down the days and times you are available during the week in your childs' planner and I will reply with a day and time block for you to come in.

I want to make sure that if you come in, I have something for you to do and help out in any way.

(For example: I may schedule a volunteer to come in every Tuesday, Tuesday and Thursday; just depends on your schedule)

Volunteers!!! Calling ALL Volunteers!!

Hopefully in the next week or two, I would like to begin contacting any parents who are willing and available to help out in the classroom.

Ranging from:
*filing papers
*reading with a group of kids
*help with new center activities (coloring, cutting, laminating, etc.)
*Sunshine Math grader

I am also looking for anyone interested in being the "Room Parent" for our class.  The purpose for this is to facilitate the dissemination of information regarding PTA programs and school events, as well as solicitation of volunteers for various events and staff appreciation. Be aware that I can only choose one person and this is different than volunteering in our classroom, but you may do both if desired.

If you are interested just let me know!

Story Structure

Hello all!

Today we continued to talk about story structure and that every story has a setting, main characters, beginning, middle, and end. I read aloud a silly story called Dragon gets by, By: Dave Pilkey. Your child was then given 6 index cards and labeled them with the appropriate part of the story. On the back of the card, they got a chance to use their artistic skills and depict the setting, characters, the events that happened in the beginning, middle, and end!

My hope tomorrow is that I hole punch the cards and string them together and display them around the room hanging from the ceiling! When they are up I will post pictures.

Tomorrow, they will get the chance to read a fiction story of their choice and show me the elements of story structure in another creative activity. Keep posted!

Science and Social Studies

There was a question at Open House about science and social studies and why it wasn't graded the same as the rest of the core subjects with a letter grade. I spoke to the grade level chair of second grade and it seems that, that it is how the District has set up that grading system. It also reflects that way on the report card. If your child has a 60% or above they would receive an "S", 59% or below a "U". This is something that is not in my control.

30 Book Challenge!

Just to clarify, if your child is reading a chapter book and you want to  figure out how many books that would count for, I am considering 25 pages to be 1 book. So for example if a book has 50 pages your child would get credit for 2 books. If your child reads a book that has 100 pages they would get credit for 4 books towards the book challenge.

I hope that clears up any confusion.

Labor Day!

Enjoy the long weekend! Remember that Monday September 5th, 2011, there is no school for kids.

Class Newsletter

Among other things on this Blog, the classroom newsletter will also be posted so you can have access to it just in case your child forgets to bring it home. The newsletter will be posted on Monday to let you know what is happening for the rest of the week. It will include "Important Dates", words to spell at home, and when assignments are due. Generally, homework is due on Friday. If for any reason the assignment is due the next day, the newsletter will indicate that.

I will also try to post a copy of the RAH (read at home) log so if you run out of recording sheets you may print them at home.

End of Our First Week!!

We've finished our first week successfully!! This is an exciting moment. :)

Your kids have learned the rituals and routines of the classroom so that the rest of the year runs smoothly.

In reading, we have been working on what is expected during a shared reading and read aloud. We have also talked about the purpose of reading and how we all can become better readers. You should see the things they have come up with on the chart! (Check it out during Open House on Thursday September 1st, 2011, at 7 o'clock.)

In math, we collected data to find information about a group of people (our class) in order to make a line graph. We all learned a little more about each other this week.

In writers workshop, the kids have been writing up a storm!! Our class writes everyday and we are off to a good start. We have charted why writers write, the tools writers use, how writers come up with their ideas, and how they can keep track of all their thoughts.

Both in science and social studies we have introduced the importance of the subject. In science, the kids learned that they are all scientists! They use tools to experiment and go through a series of steps to find out conclusions. In social studies, the students learned about different types of groups like teams, classes, families, and communities. Through the skill builder they have discussed that there are 7 continents, 4 oceans, the cardinal directions, and how to read a simple map with a key.

So, the next time your child says they didn't do much in school, parents, they have! I hear it all the time; "I love recess and lunch!", this always makes me chuckle.

Until next time,

Ms. Borrero

First Day of School!!

So, I am sure all of you want to know how today went?  AMAZING!! I was really thrilled with the group of kids that are in the classroom and really anticipate fostering a great group of 2nd graders. Today I got to share how the classroom functions by stating rules, expectations, where things are, and how to transition from one task to another. The kids are really excited about this game I have with them on their performance as a class during lessons. Today they made it to the first star, which meant a small treat before they left to go home.

During the week, we will continue to set the stage for the remainder of the year in order to maximize learning and success.

Your children should have come home with a packet of papers with the Student Code of Conduct and forms to fill out and return tomorrow (Tuesday August 23, 2011). They also have written a note in their planner as their first homework assignment reminding parents to fill out the forms. You will also notice their conduct grade; we are off to a good start, heavily encourage them to continue the positive behavior throughout the week and year.

For anyone who asked for a wish list, I am still in the process of creating one. (Who knew that a wish list would be so hard to think of? This is new to me for anyone to ask what they could do to help in the classroom)

Keep posted on my Blog, as I will try to make it a habit to keep current and upload and discuss any important class reminders or homework assignments.

Thank you so much for entrusting me with your loved ones!

Meet and Greet

I want to say thank you for all the parents who came to the "Meet and Greet" today. It was so nice seeing new and old students. I was happy to finally put a face to the names I have been reading on my class list for the past week.

I am excited about the new school year. See you all on Monday!!

It's that time of year again!!!

Hello and welcome to the 2nd grade!

My name is Ms. Borrero and I am really excited for the upcoming year and all that I have planned for our class.

It is that time of the year again in which we need to start getting our minds in gear for school, to work harder and get smarter!
